Spring Acrostic Poetry

Hey there! Here is a lesson I did with 1st graders! We created our very own acrostic poems theme centered around spring! Since we are in the beautiful season of spring, why not create some spring poetry?! This can go along great if you are teaching seasons in science!

I started by activating the kiddos prior knowledge of poetry. 

I introduced acrostic poetry by reading

We created our own acrostic poem as an entire class!

"I do, we do, you do"

This was one of the kiddos spring acrostic poem!

Science in 1st Grade- Learning about Clouds

        In this lesson students learned about four different types of clouds! We learned about cumulus, cirrus, stratus, and nimbus clouds. Students started by conducting an outdoor investigation. They observed and recorded the formation of the clouds outside and gave a descriptive account of what they saw. 

Here we discussed cirrus, cumulus, stratus, and nimbus clouds. From what we learned, we then determined what type of cloud we observed outside based on the observational notes of the students.

This book is amazing for 1st grade! It talks about numerous amount of different clouds, but I just read on the four clouds we were learning about which were cirrus, cumulus, stratus, and nimbus. 

Here is the post activity one of my students made. They were expected to create the four clouds by manipulating cotton balls. Underneath each cloud they were to write a descriptive word to describe their cloud. Then, they were to complete the sentence stem. They were to write about what they observed from all four clouds. 

1st Grade Social Studies - Wants VS Needs

Hello Everyone! So I am a new upcoming teacher hoping to share my building experiences as a new teacher with you all! I will be doing my Student Teaching in the Fall of 2015. I will be taking my certification exam (EC-6 ESL) this summer! I'm becoming certified in the state of Texas. I have done field work in a 1st grade classroom and here is one of the lessons I did! This is a Social Studies lesson on Wants Vs Needs.

I started the lesson by asking students to name any thing or item. From there we would determine if it was a WANT or a NEED.

I handed each student two Post-Its. On one they were to write or draw something they believed was a WANT and on the other a NEED. This is where we clarified any misconceptions on WANTS VS NEEDS. 

After the above pre-reading activities, I read the book, The Pigeon Wants a Puppy!

Great book to use for Want VS. Needs lesson!

Here students demonstrated their new found knowledge on WANTS VS. NEEDS. They created a T-Chart and used newspaper advertisements to cut and paste onto their construction paper.
